In Islam, every action, no matter how small, can be turned into an act of worship. This includes entering one’s own home. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught a simple yet profound supplication to be recited when entering a house, which brings blessings, protection, and a sense of peace.
The Dua for Entering Home
Arabic:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا
Transliteration:
Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa ‘ala Allahi rabbina tawakkalna.
Translation:
“In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we place our trust.”
Hadith Reference
This dua is authentically recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud (Hadith 5096).
The Hadith in Context:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“When a man enters his house and remembers Allah upon entering and when eating, Satan says (to his companions): ‘There is no shelter for you here and no meal here.’ But if he enters without remembering Allah, Satan says: ‘You have found shelter.’ And if he does not remember Allah when eating, Satan says: ‘You have found shelter and a meal.’”
(Sunan Abi Dawud)
Meaning and Spiritual Benefits
- Brings Barakah (Blessing): By beginning the entry in Allah’s name, you invite divine blessings into your home and daily life.
- Protection from Evil: The dua acts as a spiritual shield, preventing Satan and negative influences from entering with you.
- Reinforces Trust in Allah: The phrase “upon our Lord we place our trust” cultivates tawakkul (reliance on Allah) in all affairs, big and small.
- Creates a Spiritual Atmosphere: It transforms a mundane act into a moment of mindfulness (dhikr), setting a peaceful and conscious tone as you step inside.
How and When to Recite It
Recite the dua audibly (or in a low voice) the moment you cross the threshold into your home. It is recommended to:
- Recite upon every entry, whether you are alone or with family.
- Teach it to your family members, especially children, to make it a household practice.
- Combine it with the Sunnah greeting (Assalamu Alaikum) if people are present inside.
Important Note: This dua is specifically for entering any home (your own or others’). The well-known dua for leaving the home is different:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
“In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no might nor power except with Allah.”
Summary
This short yet powerful dua is a key Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) that protects, blesses, and spiritually elevates the simple act of entering your home. By making it a consistent habit, you fill your living space with remembrance, safety, and divine grace.
Make your home a sanctuary of peace begin by remembering Allah at its door.
